This page overviews the multi-year and recruitment fellowship opportunities for Ph.D. students coordinated through College of Education Academic and Student Affairs department. It supplements information distributed by the Graduate School.
Although international students are not eligible for the UDF or UEF, they are eligible for college awards.
The university & college funding opportunities are:
University Distinguished Fellowships (UDF) and University Enrichment Fellowships (UEF)
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE students; four-year award for KIN students.
- Annual award: for students entering Fall 2023 and later. $32,000 to the student. Tuition and health benefits are also included.
- Nomination letters should nominate the student for a āuniversity fellowshipā (not a UDF or UEF). The selection committee determines whether a student receives a UDF or UEF.
- University funds the studentās first and last year appointment and stipend (typically years one and five), College/department funds the middle years.
- Nominee must be a US citizen or permanent resident, and most recent degree may not be from MSU.

University Rasmussen Fellowships
- One-year, one-time award of $5000 during fall semester of the studentās first year.
- Students should be of the same caliber as UDF/UEF nominees, but are not eligible for those because they are not external applicants to MSU.
- Application should be structured like a UDF/UEF application.
- Ten awards across MSU.

University CUMREC Fellowship
- One-year, one-time award of $3000-$5000 during fall semester of studentās first year.
- Studentsā research must focus on the transformation of education through technology; this can be the use of technology in teaching (P-16) or in higher education leadership.
- One or two awards across MSU.

College Dean’s Scholar Awards
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE students; four-year award for KIN students.
- Annual award for students entering Fall 2023 and later: ½ time GA position combined with fellowship to total $28,000. Tuition and health benefits are also included.
- Approx. five awards across the College.
- Students entering Fall 2023 are each guaranteed a Summer Research Development Fellowship of $7,000 to fund research the summer after their first year. If that summer is otherwise funded, the student may postpone this award.
College Erickson Research Fellowship Awards
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE students; four-year award for KIN students.
- Annual award for students entering Fall 2023 or later: ½ time GA position combined with fellowship to total $28,000. Tuition and health benefits are also included.
- Students must have a strong research trajectory.
- Approx. five awards across the College.
- Students entering Fall 2023 are each guaranteed $4000 in summer funding after their first year of study; if they are selected for a Summer Research Development Fellowship, this will increase to $7,000. If that summer is fully funded, a student may postpone this award. These students are also each allocated $3,000 to support the āhardā costs of research (i.e. participant incentives, software subscriptions) and/or conference travel during their first two years.
College Top-Ranked Recruitment Fellowship
- One-time award of $7,500 to the top four ranked domestic applicants to College PhD programs.
- This award is in addition to whatever other guaranteed award(s) the applicant receives.
- The purpose is to provide additional incentive for the applicant to choose MSU; a number of peer institutionsā standard awards exceed $30,000 annually.
- Four awards across the College.
Submission, selection, and key dates
The below schedule will be confirmed with specific dates and times by mid-Fall 2021.
- January 2022: Complete nomination packets due to Office of Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, from programs.
- Please ensure all nominations are timely, and complete.
- We will provide details in the first week of January about how to submit applications.
- Plan to submit one document for each nominee containing all information, including the signed nomination form.
- Please use the following filename format: [LastnameFirstname.Programname.pdf], i.e. BowmanKristineKineseology.pdf.
- January 2022: Associate Deanās Office distributes applications to selection committee.
- January 2022: Programs move nomineesā applications to Deanās level in GAMS.
- January 2022: Selection committeeās ratings due to Associate Dean.
- January 2022: Associate Dean sends rankings and proposed cut points for various awards to selection committee.
- January 2022: College of Ed selection committee meets to review rankings and packets (nominators then have time after the meeting to strengthen letters).
- January 2022: Associate Deanās office submits nomination packets for university fellowships and awards to the Grad School.
Each nomination should include, in the following order
- Cover sheet indicating the awards for which the applicant is being nominated. (The cover sheet is posted with this document in the Teams PhDEdD Program Channel.)
- For University Fellowship nominees only: University Fellowship nomination form.
- Copy of MSU Graduate Application.
- Candidateās statement of purpose.
- Copies of undergraduate & graduate transcripts.
- Copy of GRE report, if submitted; scores for Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing
- Letter of support from the program.
- For University Fellowship nominees only: an additional letter of support from the studentās anticipated advisor/ mentor, detailing fit and communicating enthusiasm for landing this prospect.
- Three letters of recommendation used in the programās admissions decision.

Department Recruitment Scholarships and Fellowships
These awards are not applied to and are only available to NEW, first-time students to a College of Education graduate program. New applicants are automatically considered for any endowed recruitment scholarship or fellowship they are eligible to receive.
Educational Administration
The Department of Educational Administration offers several fellowships, which are awarded on a competitive basis with no application process. They are designed to help recruit exemplary doctoral students. These fellowships are often combined with graduate assistantship opportunities.
Richard Lee Featherstone Scholarship (Graduate Assistantship)
The Featherstone Scholarship is intended to support outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Educational Administration who have demonstrated distinguished scholarship, intellectual curiosity about educational matters and a capacity for educational leadership. Recipients shall be selected on the basis of academic achievement and a strong desire to pursue a career in the field of Educational Administration.
Margaret F. Lorimer Endowed Graduate Fellowship In Higher Education (HALE PhD only)
Recipients shall be first-year full-time doctoral students pursuing degrees in higher education. Awards will be made to students with outstanding academic credentials and prior experience demonstrating potential for leadership in higher education. This award is for a single academic year. Multiple students may be selected to receive this award.
Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) Fellowship (HALE PhD only)
Comprised of six scholarships which were previously awarded separately (the Julius E. Barbour Scholarship, the Arthur R. and Pearl Butler Scholarship, the Russell Kleis Memorial Scholarship, the Ernest & Aurora Melby Scholarship, the Archibald Shaw Memorial Scholarship, and the Don O. Tatroe Memorial Scholarship), this is awarded to an entering doctoral student in the Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education program and is for the initial academic year.
Education Leadership Graduate Fellowship
For recruiting (first-year) outstanding doctoral students, intending to pursue full-time doctoral studies in either Higher Education or K-12 Administration. This award is for a single academic year.
Literacy Specialist
Michael Pressley Scholarship in Education
For incoming doctoral level students in the areas of Teacher Education or Educational Psychology with a specialization in literacy.
Measurement and Quantitative Methods
Robert L. Ebel Endowed Scholarship
These two-year awards, provide a $5,000 academic year fellowship. For some students, there may be the possibility of the fellowship award being combine with a graduate assistantship. The Ebel scholarship is awarded to new doctoral students who demonstrate considerable aptitude for making scholarship contributions in the areas of measurement, evaluation, and assessment of quality learning or teaching. The scholarship will be renewed for a second year if the recipient makes adequate academic progress and successfully performs the duties of their graduate assistantship, if an assistantship is part of the award package.
Walker Hill Fellowship in Measurement and Evaluation
This fellowship is a two-year award, that provides a $6000 academic fellowship. For some students, there may be the possibility of the fellowship award being combine with a graduate assistantship. The fellowship will be renewed for a second year if the recipient makes adequate academic progress and successfully performs the duties of their graduate assistantship, if an assistantship is part of the award package.
Recipients must demonstrate exceptional aptitude for doctoral study in education and a keen interest in addressing the problems of teaching and learning as they can be improved through scholarly work on measurement evaluation and assessment policies and practices. Awards are based on prior academic excellence.
Masterās Level Department Recruitment Scholarships and Fellowship
Students do not formally apply for these awards. They are only available to NEW, first-time students in a College of Education masterās degree program. New applicants are automatically considered for any endowed recruitment scholarship or fellowship they are eligible to receive.
Educational Administration
The Department of Educational Administration offers one scholarship, which is awarded on a competitive basis with no application process. It is designed to help recruit exemplary students. This fellowship may be combined with graduate assistantship opportunities.
Ann Marie Bolger Memorial Scholarship in Student Affairs
(Masterās degree applicants to Student Affairs Administration program only)
As part of the application process to the masters in Student Affairs Administration program, applicants must submit their resume. To be eligible for consideration for the Bolger scholarship, the applicantās resume must demonstrate evidence of contribution to peer learning, such as service as a mentor, peer advisor or educator, student government leader, resident advisor, etc.
Applicants also provide a professional goal statement which must demonstrate evidence of commitment to the profession of student affairs. The evidence can be demonstrated by clear professional goals, participation in regional or national meetings or conferences, etc.
