Michigan State University Professor Karin Pfeiffer has been elected president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), a leading professional organization in the fields of sports medicine, exercise science and health promotion. Founded in 1954, ACSM brings together physicians, researchers, educators and practitioners to advance research, education and practical applications related to physical activity, fitness, and human performance.
“ACSM is the world’s premier organization in kinesiology, exercise science and sports medicine,” said Department of Kinesiology Chairperson Paddy Ekkekakis. “Having Spartan scholars in leadership roles within such a respected organization speaks volumes about their expertise and the impact of their work. It is also a reflection of the national and international prominence of our department and the way our faculty are shaping the future of the field.”
Pfeiffer is an internationally recognized exercise physiologist specializing in physical activity research for children and adolescents. Her work focuses on measuring activity levels and developing interventions to increase movement, particularly in school and community settings. With close to 50,000 members across the globe, Pfeiffer will lead the direction of the organization and participate in scientific direction and advocacy for research and funding.
She is the third Michigan State University scholar to be elected president, following Henry Montoye (1962-63) and James Pivarnik (2009-10).
A career defined by excellence
“The most rewarding parts have been the connections I’ve built across the field and knowing my work helps children lead more active, healthier lives,” said Pfeiffer, who served as vice president of ACSM in 2020-22 and has been a member close to 30 years. “ACSM’s members feel like family to me, and I have not missed a meeting since joining the organization. I have an immense need to pay forward all the professional training and mentorship I have received as a member. I consider it to be one of the highest honors I can attain.”
Pfeiffer has made her mark as a Spartan since arriving on campus in 1994. As Director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, she is a nationally recognized leader in the field and a National Academy of Kinesiology member. A two-time alum, she has served as the president of the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine and held a seat on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board.
