We expect to review PhD applications again in December 2026 for students who wish to matriculate in August 2027. An informational PhD open house for prospective students interested in applying to the HALE PhD program for the fall 2027 cycle will take place in the spring of 2026. Additional details about the open house will become available by early January 2026 and will be posted on our website.

The admissions committee considers the following criteria for admission in the HALE doctoral program:

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (students with a GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted provisionally)
  • References that showcase your academic ability and commitment to the field of higher, adult, and lifelong education.
  • Official scores from Graduate Record Examination taken within the last five years.
  • Professional or Paraprofessional experience
  • Admission into the Graduate School
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language) scores if English is not your native language.
  • Personal statement that addresses the following questions:
    • What experiences led to your interest in pursuing a career in higher, adult, or lifelong education?
    • What qualities, characteristics and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate for the HALE doctoral program?
    • How will the HALE doctoral program at Michigan State help you meet your personal and professional goals?

Please note that the GREs or an academic interview are not required for admission. However, you will have many opportunities to meet and talk with faculty at our annual Graduate Research Colloquium.

To apply to the HALE Ph.D. program, complete an application through the Office of Admissions Graduate Application portal and submit the application fee. Information about application fee waivers is available on the Graduate School website. A paid application fee or waiver is required for application review. Then, upload the required application materials (listed below) to the Graduate Application portal.

Please note: Once the application fee is received, you will be prompted to upload your additional materials.

The HALE Ph.D. admissions committee considers the following criteria:

International students seeking admission to the HALE program are required to submit a Graduate Application for Admission and indicate their status as an international student. International students must also be able to provide both proof of financial support and proper proficiency in English.

Current graduate students who wish to transfer into the HALE program from another Michigan State University graduate program outside the Department of Educational Administration (EAD) must complete a new Graduate Application for Admission including all supplemental materials.
