What brought you to the SCL program?
After working as a coach developer in the field for many years I had gained a lot of practical experience. Although this is the place to be, I felt a bit stuck and outdated. It is however quite intimidating to enter a MS study at this stage in life, but my craving for new knowledge and a broader network of competence trumped my fears.
What were some of the highlights during your time in the SCL program?
Being based in Zambia it was sometimes hard to participate in some of the online live-meetings and discussions. However, these were some of the most important parts of the program. Learning from others experiences, challenges and successes was of tremendous help in terms of learning and for deeper reflection.
What was your favorite SCL class and why was it your favorite?
KIN 855 was my favorite class. This class contained topics with direct relevance to my daily work as a coach developer. It made me reflect and adapt methods that I was able to test out with coaches in field. I think everyone that coaches or work with coaches should take this class.
How did the SCL program prepare you for what you are doing today?
There are a number of areas, but most critically it has improved my coach developer skills by providing insights to new models and methods. This has helped me to have better conversations with coaches, and to ask better questions (e.g. using the GROW model more systematically). Also with self-reflection, I am also able to ask myself better questions on why, not only how I’m coaching.
What is the most important thing you learned during the SCL program?
It enabled me to better reflect, and to translate new knowledge into practical application. I loved every moment and miss being challenged. It has made me a better coach developer. There are a great team of lecturers for the classes that all have passion for what they are doing. Andy, Dan and Tony are all absolute rockstars.
What advice do you have for current or future students who want to make the most out of their degree?
Find a safe place where you can apply and test out what you learn as soon as possible. Then be critical as you translate and contextualize theories into practice. Ask questions and engage with your lecturers and classmates.
