For Secondary Education English senior, Lucero Castro, being an educator represents “being part of something remarkable.”
Castro realized she was “made for the classroom, the moment I stepped into one.” Despite her early calling, the first-generation student relishes the journey that guided her from Kalamazoo, Michigan to MSU and the College of Education, where she prepares to transform future generations’ lives through the classroom.

"The beauty of my journey has been that it wasn't linear," she said. "The growth and learning that came from that experience shaped who I am and confirmed that teaching is where I'm meant to be."
Today, as she prepares for a career in education, scholarships have played a critical role in helping her reach that goal. Through the generous support of the Li Shin and Ruth Yuan Education Scholarship, she has been able to focus on her studies, gain valuable classroom experience, and fully embrace opportunities at MSU without the constant burden of financial stress.
As the first in her family to attend college, receiving scholarship support has meant more than financial assistance. It has given her confidence to step into new spaces, share her story, and see herself as someone whose voice matters.
"Scholarships have allowed me to prioritize my education without adding stress to my family's health and finances," she said. "They've opened doors to opportunities and experiences I might not have had otherwise."
During her student teaching internship, she gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience and dedication of educators. One memorable experience came during a professional development day, when teachers openly discussed the challenges they face in today's classrooms. Although the conversation highlighted real struggles, she was inspired by the way educators supported one another and worked together to find solutions.
"Seeing teachers encourage one another and remind each other of their purpose showed me the kind of community I want to be part of," she said.
That sense of community is also what she feels from the donors who invest in scholarships. Their generosity sends a powerful message that future educators are valued and supported.
"Receiving this scholarship gives me not only financial support, but also the motivation to keep showing up for future generations," she said. "It reminds me that there are people who believe in education and believe in students like me."
As she looks ahead to leading her own classroom, Castro hopes to serve as a role model for younger members of her family and for the students she will one day teach. Castro is determined to pay forward the support she has received, creating opportunities for others just as scholarship donors have done for her.
Because of donor support, one future educator is gaining the skills, confidence and sense of purpose needed to make a difference in the lives of countless students for years to come.
