P. David Pearson died on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Pearson served as John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Education (1995-2001) and was co-director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) from 1997-2001.
Pearson was a trailblazer in the field of literacy and reading education. His work helped to shape the College of Education’s distinct reputation in literacy research and teacher education.
MSU University Distinguished Professor Patricia A. Edwards spoke to Pearson’s professional impact: “David’s groundbreaking scholarship on reading comprehension, literacy instruction, assessment and the gradual release of responsibility influenced generations of researchers, teacher educators, classroom teachers, graduate students and, ultimately, countless children. His scholarship helped shape the direction of literacy research for decades and will undoubtedly continue to influence our field for generations to come.”
Aaron M. Pallas, former College of Education faculty member and current Arthur I. Gates Professor of Sociology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, was on the search committee for Pearson’s Hannah Professor role. Pallas described the Hannah Professor position as “the straw that stirs the drink.” Pallas also emphasized the critical work of the Hannah Professors (including Pearson): “They were of course extraordinary scholars, but through their mentorship and advising of colleagues and doctoral students, they made everyone around them better.”
Professor Emerita and Former Department of Teacher Education Chair Suzanne Wilson described the significance of Pearson’s scholarly work: “He led the field of literacy for decades, conducting research, collaborating with diverse colleagues (always including doctoral students), inviting critique and never shying away from the tough work of engaging in civil debate about the thorny problems of democratic education and the central role of literacy for all.”
College of Education alum (Class of 2001) and professor of literacy and doctoral coordinator for the Literacy, Culture & Language Ph.D. program at Oakland University, Gwendolyn Thompson McMillon experienced Pearson’s lasting influence firsthand. She said, “I was privileged to have P. David as a professor for my History of Reading course, and to this day, I use some of his ideas in my own reading methods courses. As I thought about why I enjoyed having him as a professor and mentor, I realized that it was his love and passion for his work that acted as a magnet. He drew me into an intellectual zone where I was challenged, but also safe enough to take cognitive risks.”
After leaving MSU, Pearson served as dean of the University of California-Berkeley Graduate School of Education until 2010. He served as an active faculty member until 2018. Beyond 2018, Pearson continued to provide mentorship and share his research in the Literacy research space.
The impact of Pearson’s work can be witnessed in the countless publications he published and awards he received. Among the honors he achieved throughout his career are his election as a Member of the National Academy of Education (NAED) in 2003 and as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in 2009. In 2026, Pearson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
“Beyond his extraordinary scholarly accomplishments, David was a brilliant thinker, generous colleague and mentor, and wonderful friend,” Edwards continued. “I had the privilege of being David’s colleague during his years at Michigan State and of continuing our professional relationship through the literacy community over many years.”
McMillon remembered her recent interactions with Pearson, “Over the years, I continued to see P. David at the Literacy Research Association annual conference. Whenever we connected, I would bring him up to date—not only on my career, but also on my family and my life. Our conversations were never just about what I had accomplished. They were about where I was going next. ... I’m going to miss P. David’s smile. I’m going to miss his warm embrace. And I’m going to miss those talks that somehow always left me thinking more deeply about what I could—and should—do next.”
Wilson shared, “MSU bestowed on me many blessings, David Pearson was one.”
