Brodhead honored for excellence in ethical practice

Associate Professor Matthew T. Brodhead has been awarded the Excellence in Ethical Practice Award from the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA). He will formally receive the honor during the association’s annual convention in March 2026.

The annual award recognizes behavior analysts who embody the “principles and standards described in the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® Ethics Code for Behavior Analysis and the RBT® Ethics Code (2.0) in their everyday work of applied behavior analysis.” 

“I’m absolutely honored to receive this recognition,” said Brodhead, who has served as an ethics subject matter expert for APBA since 2023. “The profession of applied behavior analysis has grown exponentially over the past 10 years and it has been an absolute joy to help shape and inform that profession.” 

Brodhead, an associate professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education, is recognized as a leading expert in ethics and professionalism within the field of applied behavior analysis. 

He has authored or co-authored multiple research articles and textbooks on ethics, including “Research Ethics in Behavior Analysis” (Academic Press, 2022) and “Practical Ethics for Effective Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder” (Academic Press, 2022). 

Brodhead is also the co-guest editor of the recently published special issue on Data-Informed Ethics in Behavior Analysis, published in the journal Behavior Analysis in Practice. 

Brodhead joined MSU in 2016 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2021. In 2024, he received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Association for Behavior Analysis International in recognition of his excellence in advising and mentorship. He currently serves as the associate editor for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, the leading journal in his academic discipline.
