Michigan State University now offers two expedited options for individuals wanting to become certified teachers of Chinese or Spanish.
“There is a critical need for world language teachers,” said Nancy Romig, coordinator of the program and the associate director of the Office of International Studies in Education. “In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in immersion programs and language learning, and schools are struggling to find teachers with the adequate language and content knowledge to fulfill these important roles. This program, offering options in Chinese or Spanish, addresses that gap — and hastens the pace we can get PK-12 teachers into the classroom.”
Participants can choose from two program pathways:
- The residency pathway includes a two-year teaching residency with support from field instructors and MSU faculty and academic specialists. In addition to a standard Michigan Secondary Certification with a PK-12 Chinese or Spanish endorsement, graduates will earn a Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum. There are opportunities for scholarship and fellowship support.
- The certification-only pathway is a one-year program. It yields a standard Michigan Secondary Certification with a PK-12 Chinese or Spanish endorsement.
The program is open to anyone who has or will have a bachelor’s degree by fall 2025. Current MSU seniors pursuing elementary or special education degrees may contact the Office of International Studies in Education for special pathway options. All prospective participants must pass a Chinese (Mandarin) or Spanish proficiency test.
Reimagined opportunities
MSU previously only offered certification in Chinese under the then-known Chinese Language Teacher Certification Program (CLTCP). That program began in 2008 and has graduated more than 150 Spartan educators. The rebranded Post BA World Language Teacher Certification Program launched in February 2024, and now includes certification options in Chinese or Spanish. The Department of Teacher Education program is housed in the Office of International Studies in Education.
“It’s important to offer multiple pathways to strengthen the pipeline of world language teachers,” said Jungmin Kwon, an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education. “The Post BA program has the potential to diversify and enrich the teaching force by preparing educators who can harness their linguistic and cultural expertise to create meaningful language learning experiences for PK-12 students.”
Enrollment for the World Language Teacher Certification Program is now open. Accepted participants will begin coursework August 15, 2024 on MSU’s campus.
