College of Education alumnus Peter Flynn has received the 2012 Superintendent of the Year award from the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA). Flynn retired earlier this year as superintendent of the Freeport School District 145 in Freeport, Ill.
During his 12-year tenure in Freeport, Flynn cultivated a deep commitment to the arts within the district, boasting one of the country’s top music programs. Brought about by his own personal commitment to excellence and service, he also took the Freeport district to the forefront of community leadership.
“I felt very honored just to be nominated for this recognition and I am overwhelmed to be the committee’s selection,” Flynn said. “I am also grateful to all those who supported my nomination and, most importantly, to all the people with whom I have worked with.”
Flynn earned a master’s degree in curriculum and a PhD in teacher education, both at MSU. During his 41-year career, he spent time as a teacher, assistant professor and, prior to joining the Freeport school district, served as superintendent of schools in Pennsylvania, Iowa and Kentucky.
In addition, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) selected Flynn as one of “Those who Excel” in 2008, receiving the highest honor given to superintendents by ISBE when he was recognized with an Award of Excellence.
Though he is now retired, Flynn remains active in the education field.
