Dr. Francine Menashy: “Global Education, Power Hierarchies, and Racial Erasure”
April 18, 10 to 11 a.m. Dr. Francine Menashy will present findings from a study on this neglect of racism and aim to advance philosopher Charles Mills’ conceptual work on epistemologies of ignorance for understanding power hierarchies in global education governance, with a particular focus on the education in emergencies sector. 252 Erickson Hall. Studying AI in the Classroom Coffee Hour
April 19, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Discuss opportunities to research the impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (e.g., ChatGPT) in teaching and learning. All educators are welcome. Queering Wellness: An Open Dialogue for LGBTQIA2S+ Graduate Students
April 19, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 
What does wellness look like for queer graduate students? Drawing from decolonial and anti-cisheteronormative perspectives, this dialogue will serve as a safe and brave space for queer graduate students to discuss what wellness looks like for us, how Westernized notions of wellness have alienated marginalized communities, and imagine wellness as a tool for radically sustained life and freedom. Humanistic Collaboration: A Field Guide on Curiosity and Expertise
April 20, 3 p.m. 
Jason Farman, Ph.D., will discuss the balance between curiosity and expertise in academic research, providing a how-to guide for pursuing curiosity and fields of study that are outside your areas of expertise. Learn more via the Graduate School

HALE MA Speaker Series: The Possibilities and Challenges of Community Colleges
April 20, 4 p.m. Community colleges are at the front stage of postsecondary education, offering education services to many communities and marginalized groups. The final Virtual HALE MA Speaker Series features panelists who will share their experiences and perspectives about their roles and work at two community colleges. They will share some of the contemporary issues facing these institutions, the possibilities community colleges offer to society, while also reflecting the current challenges facing community colleges in the U.S. VIRTUAL EVENT: Register to attend via Zoom

2023 Gunnings-Moton Lecture: Dr. OiYan Poon

Prints and Poetry for Celebrating Species “Delisted” from Endangered Species Status
April 22, 1 to 4 p.m. Visit MSU Museum on Earth Day for a series of arts-based activities that will engage your senses and your mind. Participate in an interactive workshop to create your own linocut prints on a small hand-powered printing press and write poems to celebrate delisted species. Learn more via MSU Museum

Broad Museum Student Night: Dreams
April 22, 1 to 4 p.m. Sleep and the dreams it conjures have inspired artists and scientists for centuries. What fills your head at night? Join us for an evening of pillow making and games meant to tap into the unconscious, all in a soothing atmosphere that is sure to put you in a dreamy state of mind. Graduate Teaching Assistant Preparation Program
Attention: Graduate Teaching Assistants
Whether you are a new, international, or a returning Graduate Teaching Assistant, the Graduate Teaching Assistant Program (Aug. 15-16, 23) offers sessions that provide policy training required of everyone and sessions to make you more effective in your teaching, including resources and professional development opportunities. CSTAT Seminars
MSU’s Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT) offers a variety of seminars that are available to anyone, including graduate students (some are eligible for RCR credit). Upcoming sessions include ANOVA and Regressions in SPSS, Survey Design, Data visualization seminar series, and creating better graphs. Learn more via CSTAT

Call for Nominations: Outstanding Doctoral Student Mentor Award
This award recognizes a doctoral student who has already demonstrated the capacity to be a strong mentor. This student will have engaged in sustained mentoring activities at MSU that help other graduate or undergraduate students succeed in their own research. These activities could be related to, e.g., a course, a lab, a community research project, field research, and/or support programs. The student must plan to be enrolled in spring or summer 2023.  Nomination Deadline: Monday, April 17.  Learn more via The Graduate School

Call for instructors for EAD 315
Do you want to gain experience with teaching? Consider teaching a course on Student Leadership for undergraduate students at MSU. This is a teaching apprenticeship that offers cohort-style and mentored teaching experience to first-time and experienced instructors.
