ACE Learning Initiative - Beyond Borders: Migration

Join Miguel Pinedo, Director of the Migration & Health Lab, for a discussion on the intersections of migration, health and social equity. Drawing on research focused on Latino communities in the United States and Mexico, this talk will explore how migration functions as a critical social determinant of health and shapes experiences related to mental health, substance use and overall well-being. Participants will gain insight into the structural factors that contribute to health disparities among migrant communities and consider pathways for advancing health equity through research, policy and community engagement.

Biography: Dr. Pinedo is a social epidemiologist whose research focuses on the role of immigration policies (e.g., deportations, parental deportations) in shaping health inequities among Latino populations as it relates to substance use, mental health and use of health services. Prior to joining UT, Dr. Pinedo received his Ph.D. in Public Health (Global Health) from UC San Diego and completed his postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley. He also previously earned his master's degree from UC Berkeley.

Learning Initiative Theme: Beyond Borders: Understanding the Undocumented Experience

The 26-27 learning initiative focuses on the historical, policy, educational and health dimensions that shape the experiences of undocumented communities in the United States. Through an interdisciplinary lens, participants will examine the historical forces that have influenced immigration patterns and legislation, explore the evolving policy landscape, and consider how immigration status affects access to education, healthcare, employment, and community resources.

The initiative will engage participants in critical dialogue about the challenges and strengths of undocumented individuals, families and communities while highlighting the roles that educational institutions and professionals can play in fostering informed, equitable and supportive environments. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of the complex realities facing undocumented populations and practical strategies for advancing access, belonging, and opportunity within their respective fields and communities.
