Learning Initiative Book Club – The Cost of Being Undocumented

Join us for a facilitated reading club featuring The Cost of Being Undocumented by Alix Dick and Antero Garcia, a powerful examination of the structural costs of undocumented life in the United States. Through Alix Dick’s personal experiences and Dr. Garcia’s social science perspective, the book reveals the ways undocumented communities are simultaneously relied upon for their labor and excluded from essential social systems and protections, creating profound costs to individuals, families, and communities.
Participants will engage in critical conversation about the book’s exploration of immigration, education, healthcare, labor, safety, belonging, and structural oppression. Together, we will consider how the authors challenge traditional narratives about the economics of immigration and ultimately ask: What is owed to immigrant communities? The discussion will provide an opportunity to reflect on how institutions and communities can better understand, support, and respond to the lived realities of undocumented individuals. Dr. Sheila Contreras, Associate Professor in the Department of English, will facilitate the book discussion. Register to participate in the book club by Friday, October 2. Participants will pick up their book from the ACE office in Erickson Hall, Room 517 between October 12-16. There will be a total of 3 book club gatherings.
Learning Initiative Theme: Beyond Borders: Understanding the Undocumented Experience
The 26-27 learning initiative focuses on the historical, policy, educational and health dimensions that shape the experiences of undocumented communities in the United States. Through an interdisciplinary lens, participants will examine the historical forces that have influenced immigration patterns and legislation, explore the evolving policy landscape, and consider how immigration status affects access to education, healthcare, employment, and community resources.
The initiative will engage participants in critical dialogue about the challenges and strengths of undocumented individuals, families and communities while highlighting the roles that educational institutions and professionals can play in fostering informed, equitable and supportive environments. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of the complex realities facing undocumented populations and practical strategies for advancing access, belonging, and opportunity within their respective fields and communities.
