Learning Initiative Beyond Borders: Roles in Immigration Encounters

In partnership with the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Office of Access and Engagement, this interactive session helps faculty and staff understand and apply existing MSU guidance on federal immigration enforcement matters, so they know their roles, responsibilities and appropriate points of contact if a related situation arises in the course of their work. Building from existing MSU guidance, the session focuses on what that guidance can look and sound like in practice. Participants will work through workplace scenarios and have the opportunity to practice clear, calm, professional responses, including when and how to refer a matter to the appropriate university office. The goal is greater familiarity and consistency in applying existing university guidance, and the ability to respond with clarity, steadiness and care in the moment. This session does not replace university guidance or provide legal advice, and it is not a substitute for consulting University Counsel or the appropriate office on specific situations. It is intended to help participants become more familiar with existing MSU resources and practice applying them within their roles and work settings.

Learning Initiative Theme: Beyond Borders: Understanding the Undocumented Experience

The 26-27 learning initiative focuses on the historical, policy, educational and health dimensions that shape the experiences of undocumented communities in the United States. Through an interdisciplinary lens, participants will examine the historical forces that have influenced immigration patterns and legislation, explore the evolving policy landscape, and consider how immigration status affects access to education, healthcare, employment, and community resources.

The initiative will engage participants in critical dialogue about the challenges and strengths of undocumented individuals, families and communities while highlighting the roles that educational institutions and professionals can play in fostering informed, equitable and supportive environments. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of the complex realities facing undocumented populations and practical strategies for advancing access, belonging, and opportunity within their respective fields and communities.
