March 2026 Literacy Colloquy

You are invited to a talk by Beth Phillips as part of the Literacy Colloquy series at MSU and sponsored by CEPSE. Phillips is conducting some of the most effective early childhood language intervention research in the U.S. Join this session for learning about early childhood language and reading development and intervention.

Beth Phillips is Professor of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at Florida State University and is one of the Associate Directors of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Phillips conducts research on early childhood education and on the joint development of language and early reading. She has substantial experience in designing and evaluating whole class, and small group curricula and instructional interventions addressing early language and literacy in authentic school-based contexts serving children ages 2 through 8.

She also has particular expertise in preschool classroom research, including designing and implementing classroom observation tools and in assessing teacher and child knowledge and skills. Phillips has received substantial funding for her work from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Institute of Education Sciences, the Spencer Foundation, and the State of Florida. She leads a team at the Florida Center for Reading Research that has designed and delivered professional development for preschool and kindergarten teachers throughout the state of Florida and works with the Regional Educational Laboratory- Southeast to provide and evaluate Professional Development Resources throughout the region.
