Preparation for the School Administrator certificate (the Elementary & Secondary Admin K-12 (ES) endorsement) can be accomplished through our Certification Pathway Program (CPP), for those who already hold an education-related master’s degree. Certification Pathway students complete the seven core courses required in the P-12 Educational Leadership master's program. The Pathway program is offered through a campus-based hybrid program mixing face-to-face classes with synchronous and asynchronous learning, as a fully online program (also mixing synchronous and asynchronous learning).
Required coursework for the Certification Pathway Program is guided by the Michigan Standards for Building-level Administrators. Applicants must reside in Michigan.
If you are interested in the Program, please contact Dr. BetsAnn Smith (bas@msu.edu) or k12adm@msu.edu.
The Certification Pathway Program is a 21 credit program, which includes a required internship experience.
Check the schedule of courses at student.msu.edu.
Candidates who hold employment with school-level administrative responsibilities may be eligible to apply for a waiver from the internship. The waiver requires documentation of primary responsibility for administering instructional programs, including teacher evaluation. Candidates must provide:
If you think you may be eligible to apply for a waiver, please contact the K-12 Unit directly to inquire at k12adm@msu.edu
Students pursuing the Certification Pathway earn credits and become eligible for School Administrator Certification. They do not earn a degree. They must first register for Graduate Certification status by completing the Lifelong application and checking the box indicating that coursework is taken for certification. They must then apply to the Certification Pathway program, by contacting k12adm@msu.edu.
Students registered for graduate certification credits do not pay matriculation fees. They may be able to transfer a total of 9 credits to a future graduate degree but must do so within five years.
Candidates who wish to apply to the program should contact K12adm@msu.edu. Application materials include: a professional resume, official transcripts of all earned degrees, an academic statement, a personal statement and letters of recommendation.
Please complete a LifeLong Graduate Education application. On the application, select yes on the question “Do you plan to use any courses to renew or upgrade a valid or expired State of Michigan teaching certificate.” In the same section of the application, please select “administrator” in the drop-down menu.
Completing a Lifelong Graduate application does not guarantee admittance to the Certification Pathway Program. Students must still apply to the department. To apply, please provide:

MDE certifies individuals who have completed an approved certification program, not by credit accumulation. The program does not accept prior degree credits or transfer credits. An M.A. degree in an education field is required to be eligible for enrollment.
Educators without an M.A. degree may earn certification through completion of the M.A. in P-12 Educational Leadership.
The program is delivered through a hybrid format that brings students to campus one or two times per month.
We also offer an all online option for those outside the Lansing area.
We enroll most students summer (=May) and fall (=late August). Winter (January) admissions occur but do not always present the most efficient schedule for applicants. To see the schedule of Certification Program courses listed on the Certification web link above, see http://schedule.msu.edu/
To calculate costs visit the Student Account’s Tuition and Fees Calculator.
Currently, federal laws restrict access to financial aid for non-degree certification coursework. We hope this will change.
Credits from the Pathway program are not transferable to our Ed.D or Ph.D. program.
Educators who are considering a doctoral degree in the near future should speak with a program advisor before beginning the Pathway Program.
