To be considered for admission to the doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision (optional concentration in rehabilitation and disability), applicants must submit all university and program materials, and pay the application fee. Persons are admitted to the program once a year with enrollment starting fall semester.

Admissions Deadline

Applicants for admission are considered for fall semester only. Applications for the following academic year are accepted through December 1. In order to be admitted, candidates must be reviewed by the program faculty committee.

Admissions Criteria

Applicants are evaluated by program faculty based on:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a grade point average of 3.0 out of the 4.0 system (B) or better.
A master’s degree from an accredited institution in relevant fields (e.g., counseling, human services) with a grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better.
Relevant work history (both paid and volunteers).
2-3 pages (single space) written statement on academic goals and career objectives that describe one’s professional goals relating to the training mission of the doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision.
Three letters of recommendation from professors, employers, and/or clinical supervisors to demonstrate one’s academic aptitudes, clinical ability, and/or professional work ethics.
Professional writing samples that demonstrate scholarly and/or graduate level writing skills.
Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (Verbal, Quantitative, and Written) if the applicant’s grade point average is below 3.0.

During the doctoral program admissions process, applicant curricular experiences are evaluated to verify completion of coursework including: (a) CACREP entry-level core curricular standards; (b) CACREP entry-level professional practice standards; and (c) CACREP entry-level curricular requirements of a specialty area so that any missing content can be completed before or concurrently with initial doctoral-level counselor education coursework.

Consideration is given to the applicant’s previous academic and professional experience. There should be in each applicant’s background a pattern of experience that supports his or her expressed desire to pursue advanced graduate studies in rehabilitation counseling. Appropriate evidence of such experience should be reflected in the applicant’s letters of recommendation.

List professional experience, awards, honors, publications, presentations, professional affiliations, and professional development activities.
Submit an example of academic or professional writing, e.g., a publication, a master’s thesis, or a paper you have submitted to fulfill graduate course requirements. You must have authored the sample exclusively. The purpose of this submission is to demonstrate your ability to write analytical English in order to provide with the review committee a clear idea of how well you will be able to carry out the analytical writing that is a central component of advanced graduate study. Samples whose content is close to the applicant’s stated interest are most useful.

The verbal, quantitative, and analytical portions of the GRE should be submitted. Applications should have official test results reported to the institution code 1465.

These transcripts must be sent directly from the institution; please contact the Registrar’s Office at the institutions you attended for the appropriate procedures and fee information.
Have the transcripts sent directly to the corresponding Graduate Admissions Representative.
For international applicants, submit the original or attested copies of all transcripts, diplomas, mark sheets, and certificates from all secondary schools and colleges attended, as well as official English translations if original or attested documents are not in English.
For applicants who attended Chinese universities, provide transcripts from any postsecondary program(s) attended, in Chinese and English, or just English (as issued). One official copy of each degree diploma earned. Alternatively, applicants may send electronic CSSD/CHESICC verification reports of 1) their postsecondary transcripts and 2) degree certificate(s). The CSSD/CHESICC reports may be sent directly to MSU’s Office of Admission electronically via Parchment through the CSSD/CHESICC website: https://www.chsi.com.cn/.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language as a condition for regular admission to Michigan State University.

International applicants are required to submit an Affidavit of Support and financial proof upon receiving a recommendation for admission. This statement must originate from your source of support and must be a certified, original statement with stamp and original signature.
