The award is presented to students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the value of diversity or multiculturalism within the University or outside the University community. Specific examples can include initiatives/programs that explore a range of themes such as diversity of cultures, religions, and abilities and are programs that have become a part of the University’s infrastructure and are sustainable.

Description
This award is given to a senior student in kinesiology whose academic and professional achievements are exemplary. Criteria: (a) kinesiology major; (b) current senior standing; and (c) minimum GPA of 3.50.

This award is given to a junior or senior student in kinesiology whose academic achievement is strong and whose involvement in community service activities is exemplary. Criteria: (a) kinesiology major; (b) current junior or senior standing; and (c) minimum GPA of 3.00.

Description
The KIN Research Fellowship recognizes outstanding research conducted and disseminated by a KIN undergraduate or graduate student. One or more awards of $750 are presented each year during the spring semester, with the number of award depending upon available funding. The fellowship is made available through an anonymous donation and supplementary funding from the Department of Kinesiology. The KIN Research Fellowship formerly was called the KIN Student Presentation Award. Changes in the title and criteria were adopted in Fall 2006.

The Ronnie P. Barnes Award was established in 2002 and is presented to the undergraduate student athletic trainer who has demonstrated outstanding achievements and leadership in support of undergraduate athletic training at Michigan State University.

The Hough Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 and is presented to a student athletic trainer who displays excellence in both the academic and clinical athletic training settings. This award is presented in memory of Dr. David O. Hough, a long time friend, team physician, and former Director of Sports Medicine at Michigan State University.

This award is presented in memory of Ray J. Saltzman, a former Michigan State University student athletic trainer. This award is presented to those student athletic trainers who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and dedication in support of Michigan State University athletics. The Saltzman Award is presented by the MSU Alumni Club of Oakland County.

The William W. Heusner Endowed Fellowship was established in 2003 to recognize outstanding graduate students who are pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in the Department of Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology.

Description
Recipients shall be admitted students in the Department of Kinesiology at the Ph.D. level and shall be selected on the basis of their research interests in one or more of the following areas: Adapted Physical Activity, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Growth and Motor Development, Psychosocial Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity.

Description
This award in the form of teaching assistantships is named after Janet A. Wessel, a professor emeritus of this department and one of the pioneers in adapted physical education. Recipients of these assistantships will work in either the swimming or gymnasium section of the lab associated with KIN 465 – Adapted Physical Activity. A $300 stipend per semester per activity (swimming or gymnasium) is awarded. Criteria: (a) Kinesiology major; (b) undergraduate or graduate student – preference given to undergraduates; (c) must have completed KIN 465 or equivalent course at other university; (d) minimum GPA of 3.00; and (e) first aid and CPR certification.

Interested students should submit a letter of application and evidence that they satisfy the award criteria to the Director of the Sports Skills Program.
Description
The Wohlgamuth Fellowship was established by Douglas and Carol Rearick for the purpose of supporting a graduate student who is committed to studying the problems surrounding the participation of youth in sports programs. Applicants are judged on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement, demonstrated scholarship, overall quality of a submitted research proposal, understanding of issues related to youth sports, and the ability to implement a research project related to current initiatives of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports. The scholarship provides a stipend of approximately $14,500.
Nomination Procedures
The purpose of this fellowship is to support a master’s or doctoral student who is conducting research in the area of youth sports. Interested students must be accepted into a graduate program in the Department of Kinesiology and must maintain student status during the year of the scholarship. Interested students must submit a letter of application, a research proposal, college transcripts, a resume of professional activities, and letters of recommendation to the Director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports. The recipient is expected to work closely with a faculty member of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports.
