Graduate Student Scholarships

More than 25 scholarships are available in the College of Education for new and continuing graduate students who show promise of making significant contributions to the fields of education and kinesiology.

Students apply for most of these scholarships through an online application system open from mid-December to late-January each year. Exceptions include scholarships intended to help recruit new students, as well as some scholarships offered within specific academic programs and departments.

College of Education Alumni Fellowship

Recipients shall be outstanding graduate students selected on a basis of academic achievement and a strong desire to pursue a career in the field of education.

College of Education Alumni Scholarship

For talented students planning a career in education. Minimum GPA of 3.0 required for students in education.

Marianne Amarel Fellowship

Recipients must be doctoral students from the College of Education interested in a scholarship of teaching at the K-12 level or in higher education. The fellowship is intended to help the awardee establish a line of inquiry concerning the scholarship of teaching and learning in a particular subject matter. The awardee can choose to study his/her own teaching or that of other teachers and their students. The fellowship is renewable for up to three years, and provides the grantee with a 50% research assistantship and $1,500 in support for travel and research expenses. The awardee is expected to be an active participant in activities sponsored by the Center for the Scholarship of Teaching.

Anderson-Schwille Endowed Fellowship in International Education

Preference in awarding this scholarship will be to a non-U.S. citizen/international student in a College of Education graduate program at MSU (student visa or permanent U.S. resident). Recipients shall be selected on the basis of academic performance and potential (including, but not limited to, the willingness to work with persons from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds). Among applicants who are similar in terms of academic performance and potential, financial need is to be used as the determining factor.

Sheldon Cherney Endowed Scholarship in Graduate Studies in Education Overseas

Recipients shall be admitted students in the College of Education at the Ph.D. level. Preference will be given to: (1) students who have completed a master’s program associated with the Graduate Studies in Education Overseas program and (2) students enrolled in the Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education program with an interest in international education.

Cotterman Family Endowment for Education

Recipients shall be candidates for the doctoral degree in the College of Education whose research has practical application and advances the awareness and prestige of MSU and the College of Education.

Dykstra Family Research Endowment in Education

Recipients of the award shall be doctoral students in one of the College of Education’s Ph.D. programs conducting research on mild impairments. Preference will be given to applicants whose research facilitates greater understanding or awareness among K-12 educators of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder --Predominantly Inattentive Type. The selection of the recipient(s) will be made each winter by a selection committee comprised of four tenure-stream faculty. Candidates must submit a concept paper to include a budget and a dissemination plan to be reviewed by the selection committee. In addition, candidates may be required to participate in an interview process with the selection committee. The applicant may apply for a one or two-year award. The award for a second year will be dependent upon whether the recipient shows measurable progress toward her or his goals, and an indication of how the funds spent in the second year will assist in the completion of the proposed work. In all cases, the selection committee shall determine if there is to be any extension of the award.

Clifford E. Erickson Memorial Scholarship

The recipient must be a graduating senior or graduate student earning a degree from the College of Education and one whom has been given recognition for either outstanding achievement or potential success in the field of education.

The Mildred B. Erickson Fellowship

This fellowship provides financial support for adults returning to school after at least four years away from formal study. It covers one class per semester, up to four credits. Students may receive awards for no more than three semesters. Application requests should be sent to Erickson Fellowship, Room 58C, Kellogg Center.

Hinman Graduate Fellowship

For graduate students in education who are Michigan residents.

Janice Marston Memorial Scholarship

For demonstrably needy and worthy graduate students re-entering the College of Education to complete their education.

Jere E. and Arlene Pintozzi Brophy Endowed Fellowship in Education

For Ph.D. students in the college of Education with specific reasearch paths.

Donald H. Nickerson Scholarship in Cultural Diversity and Minority Concerns

For American ethnic minority graduate students in education. Preference will be given to candidates studying to improve teaching and learning of diverse learners and underserved populations in the United States.

Michael Pressley Scholarship in Education

For incoming doctoral and/or master's level students in the areas of Teacher Education or Educational Psychology with a specialization in literacy.

Scholarships Restricted to Specific Departments

Robert Craig Scholarship

For doctoral students in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education. Dr. Robert C. Craig was a professor in the department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education from 1966-1989.

Ann Marie Bolger Memorial Scholarship in Student Affairs

Students are eligible to apply upon acceptance to MA program in Student Affairs. Applicants must submit a vita that provides evidence of contribution to peer learning, such as service as a mentor, peer advisor or educator, student government leader, resident advisor, etc. Applicants must also submit an essay demonstrating evidence of commitment to the profession of student affairs. This evidence can be demonstrated by clear professional goals, participation in regional or national meetings or conferences, etc.

Clyde M. Campbell Endowed Fellowship Fund

Recipients shall be admitted doctoral candidates in the Department of Educational Administration who have completed at least six semester hours of graduate-level course work in Educational Administration at Michigan State University. Recipients shall have had experience in serving as a practitioner in K-12 school administration and/or higher educational administration, and have demonstrated experience and appreciation for the role of the community in educational leadership. Recipients also shall have read widely and been educated broadly in education as well as in the liberal arts, social sciences or physical sciences.

Keith Goldhammer Endowed Scholarship in Educational Administration

For doctoral students in educational administration who are completing his/her residency year, and who has a minimum graduate grade point average of 3.75. Additional detailed and specific criteria are available in the Department office.

The Casmer F. Heilman Endowed Fellowship

For graduate students at either the M.A. or Ph.D. level in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education program whose primary focus is on work-based or work-related learning. Applicants should prepare a two to three page written statement about the focus of their work or interests and submit two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with their work.

Dr. Jacqueline D. Taylor and Family Graduate Research Grant

Recipients of the award shall be candidates for the doctoral degree in the College of Education Higher Education Ph.D. program whose research focuses on global perspectives or issues of international education and may apply for a one or two-year award dependent upon whether the recipient shows measurable progress.

F. James and Elizabeth M. Votruba Higher Education Leadership Enrichment Fund

Open to any doctoral student in good standing in one of the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) graduate programs planning to pursue a career in higher education administration. The award will go to a single student to support research and/or career enrichment activities not associated with the dissertation. The intent of the award is to enrich the recipient's understanding of higher education leadership and the role of colleges and universities in the broader society. This fund will provide opportunity for students to engage in activity that they would otherwise not be able to do and that enhances the overall quality of their graduate experience. Applicants will apply for the award outlining their expected career path, the proposed research and/or career enrichment activities, how the funds will be used, how the activity integrates with other aspects of the student's program of study, and how the proposed activity reflects the overall mission and goal of the HALE program. Recipients will be expected to share the outcomes of their award experiences with HALE as in a brown bag talk, presentation at HALE graduate student event, and/or written executive summary.

James A. Wilson Fellowship

Recipients shall be Ph.D. students enrolled in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) program in the College of Education. Preference will be given to students pursuing a master's or cognate in Labor and Industrial Relations and based on academic standing. If, in a given year, such a candidate is not found, a second preference will be for Ph.D. students enrolled in the HALE program with an expressed interest in human resource management, labor relations or leadership.

William W. Heusner Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Kinesiology

Recipients shall be admitted graduate level students pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in the Department of Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology.

Kinesiology Endowed Fellowship

For graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology who will be evaluated according to academic achievement, teaching achievement/potential, research achievement/potential and service to the university and the profession.

William Wohlgamuth Memorial Fellowship for the Study of Youth in Sports

For graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology committed to studying the problems surrounding the participation of youth in sports programs.

Teacher Education Endowed Fellowship

For continuing doctoral students who are judged to have been making a distinguished contribution to scholarship and the profession.
