As a community of scholars, HALE graduate students from all programs gather in a half-day conference to share their scholarly works from classes and projects. Presenters highlight their academic and professional endeavors in brief 10-minute presentations before engaging their audience in dialogue for scholarly discussion and feedback.
The open house is specifically for prospective students interested in the Doctor of Philosophy in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the curricula, application process, and engage faculty to discuss the program and answer questions. Register for the online event here.
The Department of Educational Administration is pleased to offer two international study experiences with the support of the Center for Higher and Adult Education. In each experience, students have the opportunity to develop comparative approaches to study higher education and gain professional experiences in the international context. These international study experiences are offered on alternating summer sessions.
The HALE Field Experience in South Africa enables HALE students to link knowledge and skills they gain as scholars in higher education to issues in the international context. The course is designed as a professional experience, involving collaborative projects with colleagues in South Africa. Much of the experience focuses on students having an opportunity to engage in supervised professional interactions and work. Students and faculty learn about higher education in another country, how to engage in organizational and cultural analysis, and how to relate specific theoretical and content knowledge to actual issues and problems. They practice skills as professionals who can interact with a wide array of colleagues. At the same time, the South African colleagues gain new knowledge and participate in professional development workshops facilitated by MSU student/faculty teams.
Each year, many HALE students participate in these fellowships to travel abroad and study education in different countries. These competitive opportunities are open to graduate students in the College of Education, and range from 9 – 21 days. Since 2011, faculty from all departments have led groups on FEGU study abroad trips in Cyprus, Indonesia, Mexico, Cuba, and the Netherlands.

Those seeking to develop their teaching skills will want to review the various opportunities that may be appropriate for their professional development and discuss these with their advisors as they plan their programs of study. The HALE program offers a number of courses that provide preparation for teaching.
HALE offers an undergraduate course on student leadership, which HALE graduate students are eligible to teach. Teaching EAD 315 provides an excellent opportunity to develop as an instructor by designing specific content for their section, gain insight through professional mentoring from a faculty member, and complete responsibility for teaching the section. EAD 315 is offered in face-to-face and online formats.
The Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning facilitates understanding of learning in adulthood and the implications of this knowledge for helping adults learn in postsecondary institutions, organizations, and in the broader society. The certificate is nine (9) credits taken of a specified set of HALE courses.
In some courses, HALE faculty members offer an opportunity for a doctoral student to gain experience through an uncompensated teaching apprenticeship in an undergraduate or 800-level course. Students interested in such an opportunity should discuss their interest both with their advisor and with the faculty member with whom they would like to apprentice.
The MSU Graduate School offers a comprehensive professional development program (PREP) for doctoral students across the university interested in preparing themselves for the range of professional abilities and skills. Workshops concerning teaching and instructional aspects of academic work are among the opportunities available. Visit the PREP program for more information.
The MSU Office of Libraries, Technology, and Computing coordinates a regular brown bag series entitled “Explorations in Instructional Technology,” which highlights opportunities and issues relating to online teaching and learning.
