Casmer Heilman, longtime professor in the Department of Educational Administration, passed away January 2. He was 59. A high school valedictorian, Dr. Heilman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oregon State University. He taught and directed vocational education in the Oregon school system for 10 years. In 1970, he received his doctorate from Oregon State. He taught at Oregon State until 1972, when he joined the faculty at MSU’s College of Education.

Dr. Heilman was a professor in the college and co-director of the Michigan Center for Career and Technical Education, a unit he founded in 1976. He was instrumental in obtaining more than $8 million in grants for the college. Dr. Heilman chaired the Education Consolidation Improvement Act Advisory Committee appointed by former Michigan Gov. William Milliken and served for several years on the MSU Career Planning and Placement Council. Shortly before his death, colleagues, students, and friends presented Dr. Heilman with a Crystal Apple Award in a ceremony at his home.
