On Saturday, May 16, 2015, alumna Deborah Loewenberg Ball, B.A. ’76, M.A. ’82, Ph.D. ’88, will receive an honorary degree from Lesley University.

Loewenberg Ball, dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan and director of TeachingWorks, will also speak at the commencement ceremony to the Graduate School of Education. She will receive a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the university, based in Cambridge Massachusetts.

Loewenberg Ball is being celebrated for her award-winning research spanning many years, as well as her widely acknowledged leadership in teacher education, preparation and professional development, particularly in math.

In addition to being dean at the School of Education, she is a William H. Payne Collegiate Professor in education and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. Previously, she taught at an elementary school for more than 15 years, and continues to teach mathematics during the summer. Loewenberg Ball serves on the National Science Board and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Board of Trustees, and chairs the Spencer Foundation Board of Directors. 

She is one of four individuals receiving an honorary degree from Lesley University, and one of two that will be honored at the graduate student commencement ceremony.
