The SETS-UP and Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows with program Director Gail Richmond
Michigan State University’s commitment to prepare more high-quality math and science teachers continues this year with the addition of 10 teaching fellows.
This group includes students supported by two different alternative preparation programs, both focused on training teachers to work in high-need urban schools. Each of the fellows have previous college degrees or careers backgrounds in science.
The following individuals were named this month as participants of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship, now in its fourth year at MSU and other universities statewide.
- Kristen Bergh from Southfield, Mich., degree in biology
- Klaudia Burton from Flint, Mich., degree in biology
- Jessica Forsman from Hancock, Mich., degree in biology/physiology
- Corey Kapolka from Ada, Mich., degrees in biology, and environmental and plant biology
- Matthew Kobe from Mount Pleasant, Mich., degrees in biology
- Jacob Sable from West Bloomfield, Mich., degree in physics
Four additional fellows are the first to receive the MSU SETS-UP Fellowship, or Supporting Early-Career Teachers of Science through Urban Partnerships. The program is funded by a recent grant from the Noyce Foundation and the National Science Foundation.
- Jennifer Fulton from Naperville, Ill., degrees in French and zoology
- Mariko Hayashi from Tokyo, Japan, degree in human biology
- Jenna Larson from Lombard, Ill., degrees in zoology
- Benjamin Unger from Farmington Hills, Mich., degrees in biology and cell/molecular biology
Both competitive programs, though they vary in duration and amount of financial support provided, prepare students to obtain teacher certification and a master’s degree in education. They are taking courses together this summer and will begin a full academic-year teaching internship in an urban school this fall. The fellows also receive support and mentoring during their first years teaching full-time.
