Kappa Delta Pi, a highly regarded international honor society in education, has recognized Michigan State University’s KDP Epsilon Kappa Chapter with a 2011 Achieving Chapter Excellence Award. Of the society’s 645 chapters, only 24 were chosen to receive the prestigious ACE award.

The MSU KDP chapter, advised by College of Education academic advisor Kristy Dumont, received the award for demonstrating two years of excellent activities based on six different categories: programming, membership and retention; recognition; service ideals; practices, inquiry, reflection-science and fidelity to human ideals; professional development; and leadership development.

Among their many recent achievements, the MSU KDP chapter also received a $200 award from the Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation for their Literacy Alive! project, which provided approximately 200 books to 17 middle school students who otherwise lacked reading resources at home. MSU KDP members met regularly with the students to read and discuss the major themes of the books; notably, overcoming great odds. The chapter also donated 30 books to an English as a Second Language classroom. The Literacy Alive! project was led by the chapter’s vice president of programs Sheila Frederixon, an MSU graduate in mathematics (secondary education) who will be starting her teaching internship this fall.

The members of the MSU KDP chapter will accept their ACE award during the KDP Convocation in Indianapolis on Nov. 3-5, 2011.
