Valerie Suszko, who graduated from Michigan State University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in special education, has been named the 2011 Woman of the Year by Greater Lansing Woman magazine.

As a Special Olympics coach and special education teacher at Washington Woods school in Holt, Suszko is regarded as an inspiration and a hero by students, parents and locals alike.

Suszko was selected for the prestigious title by a panel, which predominantly consisted of previous GLW Woman of the Year finalists. Among this year’s ten finalists were two more MSU alumnae: Gloria Miller, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, and Meredith Bowen, who earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and master’s degree in conducting.
