The 4th annual Summer Coaches School (summercoach.msu.edu) wrapped on Friday, June 29.  With over 40 coaches and sport leaders in attendance, we considered this another success.  Some of the presentations featured materials that we would like to share.  We have made them available in a public Google Drive folder, and we ask that you use these items judiciously and only with colleagues, athletes, or sport parents.

We also want to share some additional video lecture content from Dr. Driska’s lecture on skill acquisition.  We did not have time to complete our Five Criteria for a Good Practice Activity exercise.  This is a great way to self-evaluate a practice activity or drill based on five criteria:

  1. Transferability – does the drill transfer skills to the master skill or game?
  2. Contextual Interference – does the drill include appropriate elements from the master skill or game that add complexity and challenge?
  3. Challenge Point – can you add or remove constraints to make the drill more or less challenging in response to the skill level of the players?
  4. Variability – does the drill provide opportunities for players to explore a range of movements to find the solution that works best?
  5. Fun – is the drill enjoyed by players while still challenging them? (AKA – are the players excited to do this drill?)

A video playlist can be found on the Sport Coaching and Leadership video channel.  Over the next year, we will feature video lectures and demonstrations from our online sport coaching and leadership masters degree program (more info on this program at sportcoachlead.msu.edu).
