Each week, we ask a member of the college grad student community to share 3 picks related to one of their passions. This week, Kinesiology doctoral student Corinne Zimmerman shares 3 tips for improving your study space:

I am always a big fan of curating the ideal study “vibe.” Something that helps make all the work of being a graduate student a little less tedious and (possibly) more enjoyable! As we enter the hustle to the end of the semester, these are some of my study space picks:

  1. Candles + Music. In my primary study zone, I try to have soft, warm lighting to help feel calm and relaxed and music to match. Right now, I am a big fan of pine scents and the album “Give Me a Minute” by Lizzie McAlpine.
  2. Study fuel. Having snacks, a coffee pot, your designated water cup and other forms of fuel to keep you going are a must. I always have some hot black coffee on hand (no cream or sugar), some baby carrots, goldfish crackers or Reese’s peanut butter cups around to keep me going. A walk across Grand River to Foster Coffee Co is also fantastic study break!
  3. Secondary study zones. Recently Bad Brewing in Mason, Mich., has been my secondary study space where I go to do some homework or writing. It gets me into a new space for ideas to flow and keeps my other study spots from getting stale.
