Each week, we ask a member of the college grad student community to share 3 picks related to one of their passions. This week, Maggie McConnaha, a Curriculum, Instruction, & Teacher Education doctoral student, shares 3 local places for toddlers and young kids.
I’m a mom to a one-year-old toddler, and I have loved finding places in the area to take him to! Here are three local places for toddlers and young kids.
- Impression 5 Science Center: This museum in Lansing looks fun for all ages! We have spent the most time in the toddler room, which has a jungle gym, water table (smocks and crocs provided), imaginary play stations and more. Walking past the other exhibits, there are tons of hands-on STEM activities for older kids to join in on! (Cost $12, kids 23 months and younger free)
- East Lansing Public Library: I love this library! The children’s section is huge and includes a big play area with a train table, play kitchen, dress-up box and busy boards for babies. My son loves the tunnel between the bookshelves. As a gardener, I love the seed library the library supports during spring and summer! (Cost: Free!)
- Hawk Island Park: They have the best playground in the area, with a bigger area for older kids and a separated area for toddlers and babies. The splash pad and beach operate throughout the summer, and the trail around the lake is gentle for both strollers and bikes. I’ve seen people fishing, mushroom hunting and renting the picnic areas for barbecues. (Cost: $3 vehicle fee, $35 annual pass, which also works for parking at Potter Park Zoo!)
