Syllabus Development: Communicating Expectations with Care
Attention: Graduate Teaching Assistants
Jan. 3, 1 to 2:30 p.m. instructors and advanced GTAs will discuss how they develop their syllabi using the syllabus checklist and how and use it as a tool for effective instruction. After this session participants will be able to identify important elements of a syllabus and employ clear and supportive language in setting and communicating expectations for a successful semester for the students and instructor. Academic Integrity and Teaching Responsibility in the College Classroom
Jan. 3, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Dr. Shannon Lynn Burton (MSU Ombudsperson) will present key strategies in discussing the importance of academic integrity, as well as in preventing misconduct, both in its more traditional forms, as well as in the digital space. Additionally, university policies and procedures in responding to misconduct will be explored to assist you in navigating these conversations. VIRTUAL EVENT: Learn more via the Graduate School
COGS & MSU Group Exercise
Beginning Jan. 9 (Cycling) and Jan. 10 (Pilates): MSU’s Council of Graduate Students has partnered with MSU Group Exercise to host twice-weekly fitness classes during Spring semester! No experience needed. Drop-ins welcome. Class offerings and locations will be updated monthly on the COGS website.

Online Active Violence Incident Training
The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety has released an online Active Violence Incident Awareness Training program that is available for students, faculty, and staff. This training includes a presentation explaining how to respond during an active violence situation. Access this program via MSU Ability Training Compliance
Need for Students on NIH Research Study
An MSU research team is in immediate need of students to assist with a large-scale NIH-funded study. The Guys/Girls Opt for Activities for Life (GOAL) project promotes healthy eating and physical activity to middle-school-age children. All positions are paid (unless you are looking for an internship) depending on position and level of experience. See below for the positions we have available:
- Physical Activity and Nutrition Intervention Coach (1-2 days/week for 13 weeks): Do you have availability for the entire time between 12 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays? Intervention Coaches ‘coach’ at the middle schools for the project’s after-school program.
- Physical Activity and Nutrition Intervention Coach Backup (Monday-Thursday for 13 weeks): Do you have availability for the entire time between 12 to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday? Intervention Coach Backups ‘coach’ at middle schools for the project’s after-school program if/when the Coaches are unable to make their shift.
Schools are within a two-hour radius and setup/breakdown times are included (transportation is also provided), so availability during the entire time frames listed above is required. Sheldon Donald (donal121@msu.edu) is the Intervention Coordinator and would love to chat with you if you are available. Please send him an email that you are available during one of these time blocks and he will schedule a Zoom meeting.
Science Policy & Advocacy for Research Competition (SPARC)
Graduate students in STEM programs are invited to apply to the 10-week Science Policy Advocacy for Research Competition (SPARC) series that will train students on science policy communication. Training culminates in an advocacy competition and the three top winners will have the opportunity to pitch to policymakers on Capitol Hill. Learn more and apply via Universities Research Association

Attention: Doctoral Students
Join a two-day NIH-focused webinar, “Write Winning Grants,” ideal for faculty, postdocs, graduate students and administrative staff familiar with grant writing. The Graduate School and COGS will cover the $90 registration fee for 50 doctoral students. Preference will be given to first-time attendees. Call for Proposals: APIDA/A Crossroads: 180 years of Inclusion, Exclusion, and (In)Visibility
The Asian Pacific American Studies Program will host the APA Studies Symposium from Mar. 22 to 23, 2024, to bring APIDA/A communities together, promote underexplored stories and address critical issues. Submit proposals that address critical issues facing APIDA/A communities in the Midwest and beyond by Jan. 3 and learn more via the Graduate School
