Teaching and Learning About Data Through Stories: An Interdisciplinary Perspective  
Oct. 2, 4:30 p.m.
 Lee Melvin Peralta and Dr. Louise Jezierski will discuss findings from a new interdisciplinary MSU course on data and storytelling, indicating that storytelling can foster both technical data skills and address broader questions about knowledge production and representation. Learn more via PDF

Fall Raines Colloquium: Identity, Power, and Labels: A Critical Examination of Latin* Naming Politics
Oct. 5, 1 to 2 p.m. Dr. Salinas, an accomplished scholar, has published extensively on Latino/ax student identity, received numerous awards for social justice work, and holds a prominent role in academic journals. In this dialogue, Dr. Salinas discusses the significance of Latin* and Latinx/a/o/e/i/u identities and their complex labels. He highlights how naming social identities impacts power structures in higher education. Learn more via PDF

Gwen Norrell Endowed Lecture on Youth Sport and Student-Athlete Well-Being 
Oct. 6, 12:30 to 2 p.m. 
Join us at IM Circle as we welcome Professor Tracey Covassin, the Gwendolyn Norrell Professor in Youth Sport at MSU, for the Gwen Norrell Lecture. Dr. Emily Clark, a licensed clinical and sport psychologist, will also join to discuss her work with Team USA athletes and her compassionate approach to mental health and performance enhancement. VIRTUAL EVENT: Learn more via PDF

Opportunities

Call for Proposals & Student Keynote for WILD (Women*s Initiative for Leadership Development)
The WILD (Women*s Initiative for Leadership Development) planning committee is seeking workshop facilitators. The theme for this year’s event (which will be held Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the MSU Union) is We Are Not Alone: Validate, Rejuvenate, Liberate. Following the events that occurred on campus last semester, WILD wanted to embrace the idea of validating one another in how we feel, using emotionally intelligent leadership, and building community. Any topics that are directly or tangentially related to the theme are welcome. Learn more and submit your proposal via Google Forms by Oct. 5. Additionally, there is a student keynote position available (learn more via Handshake). This speaker will receive a $500 honorarium.

Graduate School Office of Well-Being (GROW) is your guide to thriving in graduate school, offering tools and resources for academic, professional, and personal success. Focus areas include stress management, preventing and coping with burnout, dealing with imposterism, advocating for yourself and more. The Office of Graduate Career Development now offers Beyond Graduate School, a career training platform tailored for master’s students, featuring self-paced courses, webinars, and a video library to enhance job search strategies. Access and account setup can be done using MSU credentials. 

Call for Applications: TA Tuition Pool Spring 2024
Attention: Graduate Teaching Assistants
The Graduate Employees Union and MSU agreed to add 500 additional tuition credits to the tuition waiver benefit for teaching assistants. The Spring tuition pool is available to students appointed as teaching assistants in Spring 2024. Apply by: Oct. 27. Learn more via the Graduate School

Volunteer Opportunity: Lansing Technical High School CTE Project 
Lansing Technical High School offers a volunteer opportunity for College of Education graduate students to assist in developing a new culinary arts Career & Technical Education program, providing valuable learning and consulting experience, with a potential start date in Spring or Fall 2024; contact Adam Roy by Oct. 23 for details. 

MSU Safe Place Crisis Chat 
MSU Safe Place offers free individual and group therapy, advocacy and shelter for MSU faculty, staff and students. The MSU Safe Place Crisis Chat is intended for survivors and co-survivors of relationship violence and stalking who are in need of support. This support service is staffed by trained volunteers on a limited basis and is available from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday. Learn more via MSU Safe Place
