Events

New GTA Institute
Attention: Graduate Teaching Assistants
Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All new graduate teaching assistants (both domestic and international) who are starting in the Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 semesters should attend the New GTA Institute. Topics include: policies and teaching, difficult communication, identities, and case studies. Learn more via the Graduate School

Using MSU Commons In Your Classroom
Aug. 17, 2 to 3 p.m. 
MSU Commons is a multipurpose platform where users can develop a digital profile, join collaborative groups, build WordPress websites, and add materials to an open access repository. Participants will learn how MSU Commons can be integrated into a course at MSU, along with tips for adapting new technologies into a digital classroom and encouraging students to develop a digital presence. VIRTUAL EVENT: Learn more via MSU Libraries

Forest Therapy Experience
Aug. 17, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 
Forest Therapy, also called “Shinrin Roku,” is an age-old practice known to foster a general sense of relaxation. Come experience nature at the Baker Woodlot in a new way and refresh! Join certified forest therapy guide Ellen Koehler from MSU’s Tollgate Farm and Education Center as you connect with the forest environment around you. Learn more via MSU Museum

GTA Pedagogy Workshops
Attention: Graduate Teaching Assistants
Aug. 23, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
All graduate teaching assistants (new and returning), postdocs, and anyone else interested should attend the Pedagogy Workshops. Topics include: technology and pedagogy, getting started with teaching, and classroom management. Learn more via the Graduate School

International GTA Orientation
Attention: International Graduate Teaching Assistants
Aug. 25, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All new international graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) starting in the Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 semesters should plan on attending this event. Topics covered include: life & teaching in the U.S., panel of international GTAs, GTA resources, community building, and employee and academic support. Learn more via the Graduate School

Graduate School Resource Fair at the MSU Union
Aug. 26, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 
All new and returning grad students are invited to attend this annual welcome program. Dean Pero Dagbovie will welcome students to MSU, and student organization, campus groups, and businesses will be present to provide information. Learn more via the Graduate School

COGS Fall Welcome Celebration
Aug. 26, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
 Come celebrate new beginnings with the Council of Graduate Students (COGS)!  Join COGS, Graduate Student Life and Wellness, The Graduate School and other campus partners for an  in-person, outdoor afternoon of fun, friends, good food, games, music and more! Learn more via COGS

Paving Your Own Pathway for Professional Success
Aug. 28, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 
This session will highlight some of the programs and opportunities that are available to you as an MSU graduate student and introduce you to a framework to help you think about how to identify your career goals and design your graduate experience so that you can achieve them. Learn more via the Graduate School

D2L Basics for Students
Aug. 29, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. 
This webinar will introduce and demonstrate commonly used features of D2L (MSU’s online learning platform) for students, including accessing course materials, submitting assignments, viewing grades, and more. VIRTUAL EVENT: Register to attend via Zoom

Well-Being & Graduate School: The Key to Your Success
Aug. 29, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 
In this session, you will learn about the Graduate School’s value for well-being as well as practical tips to help you manage your health and well-being while advancing your academic and professional goals. Setting Expectations in Graduate Education
Aug. 30, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 
This short workshop provides an opportunity to explore strategies for aligning expectations early in your trajectory in graduate school and will inform you about other activities and resources to help you in that task. Learn more via the Graduate School

Student Tools & Tech at MSU
Aug. 31, 1 to 2 p.m. This informational webinar will introduce and demonstrate technology commonly used in classes at MSU, including D2L, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Kaltura MediaSpace and more. Opportunities

EAD 901: History of Urban Education
This course explores historical, social, and political factors that influenced the emergence and evolution of urban schools and their surrounding communities. Through a lens of migration, we will learn what catalyzed the movement of various communities in the U.S. as well as the influence this had on the development of public education generally, but education in urban spaces particularly. EAD 901 is required for the Graduate Certificate in Urban Education but is open to all MA and doctoral students. Offered Thursdays (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) in Fall 2023. Learn more via PDF

New MQM Course: Data Analysis Support
Measurement & Quantitative Methods will offer Data Analysis Support (CEP982, section 002 course) in the Fall 2023 semester. This course is designed for students working on research for their dissertation or other research projects. It is open to any students who could benefit from the statistical expertise of an MQM faculty member. This course typically does not involve any formal lecture; Dr. Gorney will provide statistical advice to students in either a small group format or individually. MSU Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT)
The Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT) is a professional service and research unit at MSU. Statisticians collaborate on study design, collection, management, and analysis of research data, on grant proposals, and on other projects. The College’s agreement with CSTAT is renewed for the 2023-2024 academic year, allowing 20 hours of support to graduate students every fiscal year. Learning Assistants – Student Athlete Support Services
Student-Athlete Support Services is hiring Learning Assistants for Fall 2023 and beyond. Responsibilities include meeting with student-athletes at least two to four times weekly, closely monitoring all academic-related activities, strict and detailed tracking of course information, and facilitating students’ progress. Learning Assistants will be assigned a caseload of students and will work 9-20 hours weekly. Pay rate: $14/hour. Learn more via the Graduate School
