Each week, we ask a member of the College of Education grad student community to share three picks related to one of their passions. This week’s features is College of Education Dean Jerlando F. L. Jackson.
Dean Jerlando F. L. Jackson: “Music has always provided a soundtrack for my life, whether it was as a musician or as a listener cataloging the songs as timestamps on my life journey. Three songs that provide fond memories are:
‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. The lyrics of the song are filled with hope and the pure tone of Kamakawiwo’ole’s voice is mesmerizing. On another note, Kermit the Frog’s rendition in the Muppet Movies was not bad either. Listen via YouTube
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen. The first time I heard the song, I was fascinated by the blending of Rock and Opera. Two genres that you might not think go well together, but created what many consider to be a masterpiece. I should note that the song makes me think of Germany, which is where I lived when it was released. Listen via YouTube
‘September’ by Earth, Wind, & Fire. This playful song does not allow you to sit still. It brings back memories of summer BBQs and family reunions. As I listen, I smile and close my eyes to take a journey back to the South to see the faces of family and friends who are both still alive and those who have departed this earth.” Listen via YouTube
“COE in 3” will spotlight the College of Education grad student community — students, faculty and staff — in the weeks ahead.
