Incremental Mindset and Utility for Science Learning and Engagement
IMUScLE is a research study funded by the National Science Foundation. The purpose of IMUScLE is to understand inhibitory and promoting factors in males’ and females’ science outcomes, using a general framework provided by an expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation (Wigfield & Eccles, 2000). Primary variables of interest in this study included students’ beliefs about the nature of ability in science as fixed or malleable (mindset) and students’ perceptions about the utility of science to their lives (utility value).
This study grew out of findings from the Science in the Moment (SciMo) http://www.cedu.niu.edu/scienceinthemoment/ research study, which was also funded by the National Science Foundation. The purpose of SciMo was to provide a descriptive account of what high school science classes feel like from the perspective of female and male students.
