Thelma Bishop

Former Department of Kinesiology professor and dean of the (then) Women’s Physical Education Department, died Nov. 1, 2013.  She spent her entire career at Michigan State University, serving from 1939 until retiring in 1981.

OlsenHerbert W. Olson

Retired Department of Kinesiology professor, died on Aug. 28, 2013. Olson joined the kinesiology faculty in 1955, where he served until his retirement in 1990. Olson co-authored numerous books, including the now-classic Physical Activity in Modern Living, which helped shape fitness culture as we know it today. He also wrote dozens of journal articles, and served as editor of The Physical Educator journal. 

RomanoLouis Romano

Professor emeritus in the Department of Educational Administration, died on Sept. 30, 2013. He was on the faculty from 1966 until 1997. Within the College of Education, Romano created classes, advised students and schools, initiated the state and national associations of middle school educators and convinced dozens of districts to orient grades 6 through 8 or 9 toward a “middle school” perspective. Romano also authored 125 children’s books, including the famous “Gertie the Duck.”

Norman Stewart

Professor emeritus of special education and education psychology, died Nov. 29, 2013. Stewart joined the faculty in 1964 and retired in 1999. He also spent time teaching overseas.
