I am a teacher and would like to add another endorsement to my certificate. What are my choices?

September 16, 2016

Teachers with valid provisional, permanent, continuing, or professional teaching certificates can add endorsements that will enable them to teach additional populations, grade levels or subjects.Ā  Here are some options:

  • Subject Area Endorsements. You can add an endorsement in a subject area that is approved for the grade levels you are certified to teach by completing a teaching major or minor.Ā  Endorsements corresponding to the approved elementary teaching majors and minors (Grades 6-8) available at MSU can be added to an elementary certificate, and endorsements corresponding to the approved secondary teaching majors and minors available at MSU can be added to a secondary certificate (Grades 6-12).Ā  The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) requires a minimum of 30 semester credits for a teaching major and 20 semester credits for a teaching minor.Ā  The MTTC in the new subject area must be passed prior to adding the endorsement.
  • Early Childhood Education.Ā  Adding the “ZS” endorsement to an elementary certificate authorizes the certificate holder to teach at the PreK-K level.Ā  A planned program of at least 20 credits must be developed in consultation with an advisor in the Department of Human Development and Family StudiesĀ and filed in the Certification Office in 134 Erickson. The MTTC subject test in Early Childhood Education: General and Special Education must be passed prior to a recommendation for certification.Ā  For more information, contact the Department of Human Development and Family StudiesĀ at 517-432-9225.
  • Educational Technology. The 21-credit ā€œNPā€ endorsement authorizes the certificate holder to teach educational technology and can be added to an elementary or secondary certificate.Ā  For more information, contact the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special EducationĀ at (517) 432-7195.Ā  There is no MTTC subject test for Educational Technology at this time.
  • Special Education. Michigan has no general Special Education endorsement. K-12 endorsements inĀ  specific special education areas can be added to an existing certificate.Ā  Endorsements in Learning Disabilities and Autism SpectrumĀ are available at MSU and can be added after successful completion of a master’s degree in Special Education and the corresponding MTTC subject test.Ā  For more information, contact the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education at 517-355-1837.

If you wish to add an endorsement to an existing certificate, please contact our advising office at 517-353-9680 to develop a plan for satisfying the coursework requirements; the majority of credits must be taken through MSU.Ā  You should have an approved endorsement plan on file in the Certification Office in 134 Erickson Hall.Ā  After you have completed the required coursework and passed the appropriate MTTC, you will need to apply to have the endorsement added to your certificate.Ā  If you have completed all of the requirements for an additional endorsement, the same credits may be used to advance to the Professional Certificate or renew the Provisional Certificate.
