Position: Evaluation Specialist

Reports to: Director and Associate Director of Van Andel Education Institute


Responsible for developing systems for both formative and summative evaluations that meet the needs of Van Andel Education Institute (VAEI) K-12, Undergraduate, and Graduate School programs and its stakeholders. Develop indicators and tools that enable VAEI to measure the impact of its work, create procedures for data collection and analysis, and establish mechanisms and formats for both internal and external reporting. Work with VAEI staff to design and implement monitoring and evaluation plans for existing and new programs and will be responsible for training staff and partners in evaluation practices and procedures.


Develop a monitoring and evaluation system for existing and new programs for VAEI, including instruments and procedures for surveys, interviews, observations, and other data collection; oversee data management of all projects Develop and direct assessment workshops and training for VAEI staff including training in the use of monitoring and evaluation tools in order to implement VAEI’s system for monitoring and evaluation. Observe VAEI programs regularly to ensure that monitoring and evaluation procedures are being carried out in accordance with plans; to provide additional monitoring support; and to conduct evaluations, as needed. Collaborate with VAEI staff in the design and implementation of new programs ensuring that all program proposals include clear goals, objectives, outputs, indicators and targets as well as plans and sufficient budget for monitoring and evaluation Compile and analyze data in preparation for reporting; assist in preparing reports for specified projects; and, publish VAEI program designs and outcomes in appropriate journals and publications. Support Graduate School staff in the design, implementation, and analysis of systems to meet program review and evaluation requirements for accreditation. Assist staff in preparing external funding proposals (grants, contracts, philanthropic requests) for support of VAEI programs Oversee daily management of specified grant and contract funded evaluation and/or research projects; coordinate compliance with grant and contract specifications. Perform all other duties as assigned.


Master’s degree with a strong focus on science education research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), or an equivalent combination of science education and related work experience. At least 3 years professional experience in a research or evaluation work environment. Ability to design and conduct qualitative/quantitative evaluation studies, develop data collection instruments, and conduct appropriate analyses. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of word processing, spread sheet, data analyses, project management and communication software. Strong analytical reasoning skills, oral and written communication skills, project management skills, and grant writing experience. Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills and experience.
