Summary of Program Requirements

The Master of Arts in Literacy Instruction program is a 33-credit program within the Department of Teacher Education. It takes most students between 2 and 3 years to complete, depending on how many classes they choose to take each semester. All program requirements must be met within 5 years of the date of the earliest course.

For Michigan State University graduates, TE 801, TE 802, and TE 804 can be substituted for 3 of the courses in this program.

  • Foundations of Literacy (3 credits)*
  • Methodological Foundations of Literacy (15 credits)
  • Area of Specialization (9 credits), including:

    • Reading Specialist
    • Writing Instruction
    • Early Literacy Foundations and Development
    • Teaching Literacy to Diverse Learners
    • Children’s Literature
    • Technology Certificate
