Secondary Science Teacher Preparation

The Secondary Science Teacher Preparation Program prepares teacher candidates in developing science content knowledge and strategies for teaching science in grades 6-12. Teacher candidates take a four semester sequence of science methods courses at both the 400 level and 800 level in order to prepare them to become practicing teachers. Teaching assistantships are available for Ph.D. students who are interested in working with science methods course instructors. Course instructors for these courses support the teacher candidates in their senior and internship years in developing standards-based practices in science planning, teaching and working with students, and assessment.

The science methods course curriculum focuses on inquiry and application based practices and a teaching cycle of planning, teaching, assessing, and reflecting. In addition, the program helps teacher candidates become a successful and functioning member of the teaching profession. The course requirements are listed on the secondary team website (http://education.msu.edu/te/secondary/).

Secondary Science Subject Area Leader

The secondary science methods course curriculum focuses on inquiry based practices and becoming a successful and functioning member of the teaching profession. The course requirements for are largely determined by the Subject Area Leader in the Secondary Science Teacher Preparation Program. Each leader, together with their course instructor team, creates and shapes the course curriculum.
