Elementary Science Teacher Preparation

The Elementary Science Teacher Preparation Program prepares preservice teachers in developing science content knowledge and strategies for teaching science in the elementary grades. Science methods courses, at the 400 level and 800 level, are included as part of the preservice teachers’ preparation. Teaching assistantships are available for Ph.D. students who are interested in being science methods course instructors. Course instructors for these courses support the preservice teachers and interns in developing standards-based practices in science planning, teaching and assessment.

The science methods course curriculum focuses on inquiry based practices and becoming a successful and functioning member of the teaching profession. The course requirements for course instructors are largely determined by the Subject Area Leader in the Elementary Science Teacher Preparation Program. Each leader, together with their course instructor team, create and shape the course curriculum.
