Exploration of Social Vulnerability of Individuals with Autism and other Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Project

The Exploration of Social Vulnerability of Individuals with Autism and other Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Project (Marisa Fisher, PI) is seeking a research assistant for a 1/2 time assistantship for the Fall of 2014- Spring 2015. The project involves collecting and analyzing data on the social and bullying behaviors/experiences of youth and young adults with and without autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews, in-person surveys, and online questionnaires. Data may be collected from individuals with disabilities, their parents, teachers, and peers. Qualitative and quantitative data will be used to analyze reports of bullying and other forms of victimization within and outside of the school setting. We will compare reports from various informants and we will examine differences in experiences based on social behaviors and specific diagnoses.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • mastery of written and spoken English
  • the ability to transcribe interviews
  • willingness and availability to collect data and conduct interviews in schools across Michigan (with the option of traveling nationally)
  • experience using SPSS
  • a high degree of self initiative
  • ability to work both collaboratively and independently

 

Ideally, applicants would also have:

  • experience working with individuals with autism and/or intellectual disabilities
  • interest in working with individuals with disabilities
  • background in qualitative data collection and analysis
  • experience with conducting interviews and administering surveys
  • experience writing empirical research articles
