A total of 120 credits, including elective credits, are required for the Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. Students must complete University Integrative Studies and Writing Requirements, and admission and core requirements for the Athletic Training major, including successful completion of clinical experiences.
All undergraduate students at Michigan State University must complete University Integrative Studies and Writing requirements. Course selections are tailored to various majors.
To satisfy the University's requirement for 24 credits of Integrative Studies, kinesiology students must complete:
NOTE: In lieu of 8 credits in Integrative Studies in General Science (ISB (3 credits), ISP (3 credits) and 2 credit Lab course), students in the Athletic Training major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree may complete an alternative science track that consists of the following courses: Chemistry 141 and 161, Kinesiology 251, and Physiology 250. The completion of Chemistry 161 and Kinesiology 251 satisfies the laboratory requirement. Chemistry 141 and 161, Kinesiology 251, and Physiology 250 may be counted toward both the alternative science track and requirements for the major.
4. At least two Integrative Studies courses that emphasize diversity
To fulfill the University's writing requirement a student must:
Each of the following prerequisite courses must be passed with a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 before application to the Athletic Training major:
Each of the following courses (or approved equivalencies) must be passed with a minimum grade of 2.0 for formal admission to the Athletic Training major at or before 56 credits. These courses are also required for the Athletic Training degree (18 credits):
All of the following courses must be passed with a minimum overall grade-point average of 2.0 (40 credits):
The following course (1 credit):
CEM 161 Chemistry Laboratory I (1 cr)
All of the following courses with a minimum overall grade-point average of 2.0 (15 credits):
The following course (3 credits)
KIN 491 Athletic Training Practicum Course (3 cr)
Completion of all clinical rotations, with a minimum grade of 2.0 each semester:
KIN 427 Clinical Rotations in Athletic Training (4 cr)
A candidate must meet a minimum clinical evaluation score as required by the program director based on performance in clinical rotation experiences and competency.
Meet professional standards as designated by the department.
The Athletic Training Program at MSU requires specific costs for completion of the program. Please see the Athletic Training List of Specific Costs for more details.
Please read, understand, and follow all of the directions found in the Athletic Training Undergraduate Student Handbook.
To help you keep track of your requirements, please see the Undergraduate Athletic Training Planning Grid.
To help you plan your course schedule prior to enrollment, please see the suggested courses by year. Use this information as a guide; some classes may not be available during the suggested semesters. In addition to academic year enrollment, some students may also opt to take classes during the summer semesters.
Students may apply for admission to the Athletic Training Professional Program in February of sophomore year, pending successful completion of all prerequisite requirements.
