Master's in Student Affairs Administration

Supplemental Application Materials & Process

Our SAA admissions committee considers the four following criteria:

  1. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Submit all transcripts from degree-granting institutions.
  2. SAA personal statement
    • Submit a 750-1000 word statement answering the following questions:
      • What experiences led to your interest in pursuing a career in student affairs?
      • How have your qualities, experiences, and skills prepared you to be a strong candidate for the SAA M.A. program?
      • How will the Michigan State University SAA M.A. program help you meet your personal and professional goals?
  3. Three Letters of Recommendation
    • All applicants must include letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be an academic recommendation from a faculty member who can speak to the applicant's ability to excel in graduate study. The remaining letters should be academic or professional recommendations from individuals who can speak to the characteristics, skills, and abilities the applicant has that will support their success in the student affairs field.
  4. A resume detailing professional and/or paraprofessional experience
    • Include a resume that describes experience such as leadership roles/involvement in on-campus organizations or professional employment demonstrating commitment to the student affairs field.

To apply, first submit your application to the Graduate School. You will then be prompted by email to upload the remaining supplemental materials to the Graduate Education Application Portal. Use the applicant ID number and password created when applying to the Graduate School to access this portal.

Application Deadlines

All application and supplemental materials must be submitted by December 5.

Notification of admissions decisions will be delivered via email by the end of January. Admitted applicants will be invited to attend Spartan Preview Days held in mid-February.

Application Checklist

Step One

Apply to MSU
Submit Online the MSU Application for Graduate Study and fee ($65.00 US): The program code for our program is 2246. The graduate school application asks for an academic statement and a personal statement. Under each field, please enter "Please see my personal statement uploaded on the Graduate Education  applicant portal."
Step Three

Submit Transcripts
Order official transcripts from all degree-granting institutions and have them sent to: Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education Program

Notes

International students must also include certified copies of degree certificates with notarized English translation of all transcript materials. International applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency if English is not their first language. International students must follow additional directions posted on the International Students webpage.

Students who attended Chinese institutions for their bachelor's degree must follow additional directions posted on The Graduate School Verification Process for Transcripts and Degrees from China webpage.

Transfer Students: Applicants who wish to transfer into the HALE SAA M.A. program from another MSU graduate program outside the Department of Educational Administration (EAD) must complete a new application, including the Graduate Application for Admission and all supplemental materials. Current EAD students looking to transfer to another program within EAD should consult their advisor and the coordinator of the program.

The GRE or an academic interview are not required for admission.
