Master's in Student Affairs Administration

Application Process

Our admissions committee considers the four following criteria:

  1. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (Applicants with a GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted provisionally.)
  2. Three (3) References
  3. Personal statement
  4. Professional or paraprofessional experience (e.g., leadership role/involvement on campus or professional employment demonstrating your commitment to the student affairs field)

To apply, first submit your application to the Graduate School. After you submit your completed application, you will receive an email to upload your application materials to the Graduate Education Application Portal. You will need your applicant ID number and the password you created when you completed your application to the Graduate School.

Application Deadlines

Completed applications are due December 15. Completed applications received after December 15 will be considered for fall admission as space permits.

You will be notified of your admission decision via email by the end of January. If accepted, you will be invited to attend Spartan Preview Days held in mid-February.

Step One

Apply to MSU
Submit Online the MSU Application for Graduate Study and fee ($65.00 US): The program code for our program is 2246
Step Two

Submit Resume
Upload your resume to the MSU Graduate Education Application Portal
Step Three

Submit Letters of Reference
At least one (1) reference should be from a faculty member whom has taught you. The system generates an auto-message from admis@msu.edu to recommenders with directions to upload letters on the portal.
Step Four

Submit Personal Statement
Please answer the three (3) questions below and upload to MSU Graduate Education Application Portal
  • What experiences led to your interest in pursuing a career in student affairs?
  • What qualities, characteristics, and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate for the SAA M.A. program?
  • How will the the SAA M.A. program at Michigan State University help you meet your personal and professional goals?
Step Five

Submit Transcripts
Have each degree-granting institution you have attended email haleadm@msu.edu or mail your official transcript to the HALE admissions assistant. Please note: We cannot accept unofficial transcripts.

Notes

International students must also include certified copies of degree certificates with notarized English translation of all transcript materials. International applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency if English is not their first language. International students must follow additional directions posted on the International Students webpage.

Transfer Students: Applicants who wish to transfer into the HALE SAA M.A. program from another MSU graduate program outside the Department of Educational Administration (EAD) must complete a new application, including the Graduate Application for Admission and all supplemental materials. Current EAD students looking to transfer to another program within EAD should consult their advisor and the coordinator of the program.

The GRE or an academic interview are not required for admission.
