Course Advice
With the assistance of an advisor, HALE MA students plan a program of study tailored to meet their educational needs and professional goals.
Students in the HALE MA program will enroll in a minimum of 30 credit hours. In addition to the following program requirements, candidates must satisfy all college and university graduation requirements.
Curricular Structure:
The HALE MA program requires successful completion of 30 credit hours as follows, in addition to college and university requirements.
Core Courses (6 credit hours)

Major Courses (9 credit hours)

Support courses (15 credits of supplemental/related courses with at least 9 additional credits from EAD courses):
These credits are elective courses, approved by the student's academic adviser, in which a minimum of three are thematically connected to the student's area of interest. These credits may include additional courses within the HALE program, courses within EAD, and courses outside the department, field experiences, practica, or independent studies.

Note: University policy specifies that at least 20 of the 30 semester hours of coursework required for the master's degree be taken after admission to the master's degree program. Therefore, a maximum of 9 semester hours of coursework taken under Lifelong Education status at Michigan State University or transferred from an another University may be credited toward the master's degree with approval of one's academic advisor of the college. The program must be completed within five calendar years. There is also a residency requirement: at least six semester credits must be earned on the MSU campus.
