Nicole Micolichek, Class of 2013
My name is Nicole Micolichek and I am in my second year of the Student Affairs Administration (SAA) program. I am originally from Denmark, Wisconsin (near Green Bay) and graduated from St. Norbert College, an institution of about 2,500 in 2011. I graduated with a major in English and minors in Leadership Studies and Communication. During my undergrad, I had experience with the Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Student Government Association, and was extremely involved with Orientation (as both an orientation leader, and orientation intern) as well as First Year Experience programming (as a mentor, and as the intern). These experiences were what confirmed my decision to pursue a master's degree in student affairs.

I have no hesitation in saying that MSU has offered me truly amazing experiences, relationships, and opportunities. My Graduate Assistantship with Residential Education and Housing Services as an Assistant Community Director in Shaw Hall is just one of the outstanding experiences I will always remember. I get to experience supervising a staff of Resident Assistants, advising a student group, conducting judicial meetings, among many other professional opportunities. What is most beneficial is that my assistantship is the perfect place for me to practice all the theory that I learn in class. There really is the ability to create a seamless learning opportunity since our faculty draw on our assistantships in class discussion and my supervisor asks about what I am reading and working on in class. The ability to put theory into practice was a major requirement when I was searching, and I have not been disappointed.
I have been able to take advantage of a lot that MSU has to offer in terms of exploring my interest in different functional areas, presenting for undergraduate conferences and research colloquiums, participating in the Student Affairs Graduation Association, among many others.
As you begin your journey of applying to graduate programs- be it MSU or others- feel free to ask any questions that you may have. You have started your search at a great institution- we are excited you are considering the SAA program! GO GREEN!

students. In my last year as an undergraduate student, I joined the National Association of Student Personal Administration (NASPA) in the Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP). Through these experiences and with the support of mentors, I decided to pursue a master's degree in student affairs.
I can wholeheartedly say that coming to Michigan State University (MSU) has provided me an all-encompassing experience that has been both challenging and supportive. The SAA faculty members are dedicated in creating a learning environment that integrates theory into practice from day one. I find myself already using different theory models to help me better understand and support the students I am working with in my Residence Education and Housing Services assistantship.
I also appreciate the ability to define my own educational experience within SAA. The assistantship choices, practicum experiences, international opportunities and organizations such as the Student Affairs Graduate Association all provide students the flexibility to personalize their involvements and professional development.
I must say, I am excited you are considering MSU and the field of student affairs. Please let me know if you have any questions about the SAA program or graduate school in general. Best of luck future colleagues!
