School Psychologist
& School Guidance Counselor Certification
Individuals who wish to become School Psychologists or School Guidance Counselors should apply for Michigan certification as soon as they have met the requirements. Requirements change over time, and a Michigan certificate serves a permanent record that all certification requirements were met at the end of a student’s program. Michigan certification is also important for individuals who seek certification in other states. Reciprocity exists among many states, and having a Michigan certificate will make it easier to become certified elsewhere. In addition, certification in other states requires an institutional recommendation from MSU, and without Michigan certification it can be difficult to document that an individual met certification requirements before leaving MSU.

Application for the Michigan School Guidance Counselor License
MSU’s Master of Arts in Counseling program will be discontinued and is no longer admitting new students. Only students who have already been admitted to the program are eligible for certification as a School Guidance Counselor through MSU. Teachers may add Guidance and Counseling to an existing teaching certificate as an endorsement. Individuals without teacher certification can apply for the School Guidance Counseling License. In either case, the candidate is required to pass the Guidance Counselor (051) Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC).
