Candidates for Michigan teacher certification are required to pass tests designed by the State of Michigan to ensure that certified teachers have the basic skills and content knowledge to teach effectively. The competency exams are known as the Michigan Test(s) for Teacher Certification (MTTC).
The Professional Readiness Examination (PRE)
Before students can be admitted to the teacher preparation program, MSU must receive official notification that they have passed all three parts (Reading, Writing
and Mathematics) of the MTTC Professional Readiness Exam (PRE) or have demonstrated basic competency in those areas using approved alternate pass measures. Please see application and admission information to learn more about this requirement.
Subject Area Tests: Elementary Certification
Students seeking elementary certification, including those with Education, Special Education and Child Development majors, must take and pass the MTTC in Elementary Education (Test 103) as a condition for progressing to the internship. Passing the Elementary Education test is a requirement for completing the teacher preparation program and becoming certified as an elementary teacher. To become certified in the subject area of the teaching major (grades K-8), it is also necessary to pass the MTTC for that subject . However, passing the MTTC corresponding to the teaching major is not a requirement for program completion.
Students with degree majors in Special Education-Learning Disabilities or Child Development must pass additional tests to become certified in those areas. Special Education majors must pass the Learning Disabilities MTTC (Test 063) to be recommended for the K-12 Learning Disabilities endorsement. Child Development majors and Elementary Education majors with a teaching minor in Early Childhood-General and Special Education must pass the Early Childhood-General and Special Education MTTC (Test 106) before they can be recommended for the ZS endorsement. However, passing those tests is not a requirement for program completion.
Subject Area Tests: Secondary Certification
Students seeking secondary certification, including Music Education and Art Education students, must take and pass the MTTC corresponding to their teaching major as a condition for progressing to the internship. Passing the test in the area of the teaching major is a requirement for completing the teacher preparation program and becoming certified as a secondary education teacher. To become certified in the area of the teaching minor, candidates must pass the corresponding MTTC (this must be done prior to the internship if the student wishes to be considered for a placement that involves teaching the minor). However, passing the minor test is not a requirement for program completion.
Subject Test Codes (Note that Child Development majors and candidates for the "ZS" endorsement should take the Early Childhood-General and Special Education test and Elementary Education students with Language Arts teaching majors should take the Language Arts test if they wish to become certified to teach Language Arts.)
