Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)

Candidates for Michigan teacher certification are required to pass tests designed by the State of Michigan to ensure that certified teachers have the basic skills and content knowledge to teach effectively. The competency exams are known as the Michigan Test(s) for Teacher Certification (MTTC).

The Basic Skills Test

This Basic Skills Test (Test 096) must be taken and all three sub-tests must be passed before students are admitted to the teacher preparation program. The test includes sub-tests in reading, writing, and mathematics. If one or more sub-test is failed, that particular sub-test can be retaken. Michigan State University students are encouraged to take the Basic Skills Test during their freshmen year but the test should be taken no later than fall of the sophomore year. Official results must be sent directly to MSU (Institution Code 18).

Subject Area Tests: Elementary Certification

Students seeking elementary certification, including those with Education, Special Education and Child Development majors, must take and pass the MTTC in Elementary Education (Test 083) as a condition for progressing to the internship. Passing the Elementary Education test is a requirement for completing the teacher preparation program and becoming certified as an elementary teacher. To become certified in the subject area of the teaching major (grades 6-8), it is also necessary to pass the MTTC for that subject (this must be done prior to the internship if the student wishes to be considered for a placement in grades 6-8 teaching that subject). However, passing the MTTC corresponding to the teaching major is not a requirement for program completion.

Students with majors in Special Education or Child Development must pass the tests in those areas (e.g., Learning Disabilities [Test 063] or Early Childhood Education [Test 082]) to be recommended for endorsements to teach those populations. However, passing those tests is not a requirement for program completion.

Subject Area Tests: Secondary Certification

Students seeking secondary certification, including Music, Art and Communicative Sciences and Disorders (CSD) students, must take and pass the MTTC corresponding to their teaching major as a condition for progressing to the internship. Passing the test in the area of the teaching major is a requirement for completing the teacher preparation program and becoming certified as a secondary education teacher. To become certified in the area of the teaching minor, candidates must pass the corresponding MTTC (this must be done prior to the internship if the student wishes to be considered for a placement that involves teaching the minor). However, passing the minor test is not a requirements for program completion.
